14 Teething Remedies for Babies

Teething starts in most babies at around 4 months of age and can be a distressing time for babies.  Their gums ache and hurt constantly as the tooth starts pushing through.  During this time they will want to chew on anything they can find to help relieve this pressure.

It can be such a tough time as bub struggles through the aching pain of sore gums and emerging teeth.  They can get so very cranky and upset and its so hard to get them to sleep.  To help relieve the symptoms of teething we have selected our favourite teethers that you can either purchase or make yourself:

1. Wash Cloth

Sometimes the simplest remedies are the best. Freeze a damp wash cloth and let baby chew on it to cool and numb their aching gums. Some mums like to tie a knot in the wash cloth before freezing to add some different surfaces for the teething bub to navigate.

You can also try soaking the cloth in cooled chamomile tea prior to freezing for added calming properties and benefits. Then when you are done simply through in the wash.

So simple!

2. Matchstick Monkey

Not just any teether, the Matchstick Monkey is an award winning teether that will soothe & calm baby’s sore gums with it’s innovative and clever features.

It’s wide monkey arms are easy to grasp and your lil one will love chewing on it’s flexible parts.

From his cute little head to his little monkey toes, he is designed to pass through front teeth and right to the source of the pain.  Whether the pain be in the front or the very back of their mouth, the Matchstick Monkey can easily reach those sore spots.

What separates this teether from the rest is at the back of the monkey head are little bumps that are soft and kind to your baby’s gums.  This is where you can pop the teething gel to add further pain relief in a way that is both easy and hygienic.

Thanks to these clever bumps, the Matchstick Monkey is also perfect training toothbrush.

8. Breast Milk Icey Poles

For babies between 4 and 6 months old you can make a frozen nutritious teether out of the milk they feed on.

Simply pour some breast milk or baby formula into an ice pole mould.

For babies older than 6 months you can also pop in some fruit or veggies before freezing to add extra texture and flavour.

9. Toothbrush

This is a teething trick that also promotes future dental health.  Chewing on a toothbrush gets your teething baby used to having a toothbrush in their mouth and at the same time they are giving their gums a good massage.

10. Freeze a Baby Bottle

Fill a baby bottle with a little water and place it upside down in the freezer.

Once the water is frozen solid in the teat take it out and give it to your teething baby.

They will love chewing on the cold but soothing teat.

Chill a metal spoon in the fridge for a few hours, then let your baby enjoy. Wooden mixing spoons also have a great hard texture that babies get a lot of relief from.
